ࡱ> 130 bjbj 4"!!!!!5555Q 50]]]]]888$U^(!88888(!!]]=hhh8R!]!]h8hhh] gsq5.hS0hRhhJ!<88h88888(( ^8888888888888888 : Canadian Masters Honours Great Athletes, Current and Past July 18, 2009 - At the Athletics Banquet held as part of the CMAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday, July 18th, in Kamloops, BC, the CMAA honoured current athletes, by presenting awards to the 2008 Athletes of the Year, and some current and past athletes, by inducting eight new members into the Canadian Masters Athletics Hall of Fame. The Athlete of the Year award for 2008 was expanded compared to 2007, to include separate awards for Running/Walking and Field Events, for men and women. In the presentation, it was indicated that the expanded awards were introduced to give more athletes a chance to be considered for the annual awards, and as a response to requests from members. The 2008 winners announced were the following: Field Events, Women Margaret Tosh from Saskatchewan, who set Canadian W70 records in 2008 in five Throws events, the Weight, Shot, Discus, Hammer and Javelin, and in the Throws Pentathlon. In winning, she received more votes from the CMAA Executive than Liz McBlain, W60, and Myrtle Acton, W75, two other throwers who had been short-listed. Field Events, Men Don Ritchie, a Combined Events athlete from Ontario, who had set Canadian records in the Heptathlon, the Decathlon and the Indoor Pentathlon. Because of the combined nature of his events, Don qualified in both the Field Events and the Running/Walking categories. Don beat out M60 Jean-Pierre Mayer, who had set Canadian records in several Field events in the World Indoor Championships in France. Running/Walking, Men Alain Boucher, an accomplished W45 runner from Ontario, won for his Canadian records set in 2008, with very high age-graded scores, in the 800m, at 94%, the 1500m, at 93% and the Steeplechase, at 92%. Don Ritchie was the runner-up in this category. Running/Walking, Women Diane Palmason, British Columbia, won this category as a result of her W70 records set in 2008 a Canadian record in the 200m and a World record in the 400m, plus being part of record-setting relay teams, a 4 x 100 Canadian record and a 4 x 400 World record. After receiving the Athlete of the Year award, Diane Palmason was introduced as the Chair of the CMAA Hall of Fame Committee. Members of the Committee read citations introducing the 2009 inductees into the Canadian Masters Athletics Hall of Fame. In a moving ceremony, the accomplishments of the following inductees, in the category of s , were summarized: Earl Fee, Ontario Canadas greatest masters runner, named the World Male Master Athlete of the Year in 2005, set over 50 individual World middle distance records over a period of 23 years, and is still setting them at age 80; Olga Kotelko, British Columbia since 1997, she has been running, jumping and throwing and setting Canadian and World records in the W80, W85 and now the W90 age groups, in single and combined events; Roger Ruth, British Columbia the pioneer masters pole vaulter, who was never defeated in masters competition until an injury ended his vaulting career, and who still holds M40 Canadian records in the Pole Vault, Long Jump and Triple Jump set in 1972-73. Vernon Whitey Sheridan, Ontario a legend in road races and cross country running, who competed from age 13 in 1929 to his 85th year, ran one 30K race each year for 50 years; Ed Whitlock, Ontario distance runner, set many World records in the M70 and M75 age groups, including being the first man to run Marathons at age 70 and 75 in less than 3 hours; Howard West, Saskatchewan a runner, jumper and thrower, who began athletics at age 83, and won several medals, including a gold in the Throws Pentathlon, at the World Championships; and Jean Horne, Ontario in a 25 year middle distance running career, she won 11 gold and 10 silver medals in 10 World Masters Championships, and is now competing in race walking.
